HOLY MONASTERY
OF THE BIRTH OF VIRGIN MARY
OF VLASIO

it is situated in a slope of the mountain of "Karavas" near the village Vlassi. The monastery was built in the begging of the 17th century by George and his son Konstantinos, residents of the village Vlassi, who were offsprings of the proud family of Soutziarides the members of which were officials in Moldovlachia and in the Patriarchate. The tradition says that the monastery was built as a token of gratitude for being rescued from a predatory raid. It has been honored with the cross-source value of three patriarchate sigils: of the Ecumenical Patriarch Cyril II (in 1659), Gavril IV (in 1782) and Cyril VI (in 1814). The religious paintings of the catholic structure (the only one saved today) have been performed by the icon painter Ioannis and his assistant Ioannis in 1644. During the War of Independence, many fighters found a shelter in the monastery, while it was here that Karaiskakis made his plans for attacking Mustafa Pasha of Skondra. Moreover, a secret school ("Krifo Sholio") operated here, and for many years both the teacher and the priest of the village were being paid by the Monastery. Finally, it is said that during the Turkish Oppression in the monastery also operated a hospital (Royal Decree 29/01/1907 Greek Official Gazette 19).
