HOLY MONASTERY
OF THE BIRTH OF VIRGIN MARY
OF KOSTI

this monastery is situated in the borders of Koubouriana and Stefaniada. According to the tradition, two brothers, Kostas and Dimitris, were herding their animals in this area. Kostas kept seeing a light in the area where the monastery is built today, in contrast with his brother who could not see it. Therefore, Kostas decided to visit the place where he saw the light. When he reached there, he found on a tree the icon of the Birth of Virgin Mary before which candles were lit. Then Kostas, after splitting the sheep with his brother, he sold his lot and built the church in honour of Virgin Mary. Hence, this is the person from whom the monastery took its name. Nowadays, it is saved only the catholic which is consisted by the main church and it is a single-naved cross-shaped basilica with dome, of Athos type, and has a wooden ceiling narthex that is posterior. The religious paintings of the church were completed on 30.12.1759, with the contribution of the holy panosiotatos Daniil the priest-monk, Theoktistos the priest-monk, Parthenios the monk, and the chief priest of the holy Fanarion and Neochorion Makarios. Its iconostasis is gilded with an ornate design. After the Royal Decree of the 29.01.1907, the Monastery became part of the Monastery of Spilia as a Monastery Dependency.
